Yalla Baladi Student Features

I began taking bellydance classes during a time when I wanted to nurture, and pour my energy back into myself. I’ve now been dancing for 2 ½ years, and have performed various times in groups or duets. This form of dance has immensely improved my confidence and nourished my feminine energy. I see my body completely differently than I did before dance. I enjoy working with the mind ~ body connection in dance and challenging myself through difficult moves, choreographies, and performance opportunities. Throughout my Bellydance journey I’ve had the privilege to dance with many inspiring women and dancers. I’ve felt nothing but overflowing support, love, and reassurance from the community along the way.

I have been bellydancing for a year and a half with Julie. I never took any form of dance before, but bellydance was something I always wanted to try. Life, kids, job, etc, always got in the way. At 50 I finally decided it was time for something that was just for me and signed up for classes. So glad I finally did. Julie has been a fantastic and very patient teacher. My coordination has gotten better, as has my body positivity. I have been able to perform in front of an audience with confidence. And my mom finally got to see one of her girls in a dance recital. I look forward to more performance opportunities and the chance to share the dance with others. Next goal, to be able to do two separate movements at the same time.

I originally started bellydancing 17 years ago for reasons lost to the sands of time, and continued for a couple of years before taking a break. After my second was born, I saw Julie performing at Greekfest, and decided it was time to get back into it. I’ve now been dancing with Julie for 8 years. Dancing has been so much more than just learning the steps; I’ve learned self-confidence, gained strength and coordination, and met a community of welcoming, supportive people.

This is the first time that I have taken any type of adult dance class and it has been a wonderful experience. It is a great way for me to ‘shimmy’ off the stress of the day and I always feel better leaving than I did when I arrived. The movements seem difficult at the start but by the end of class it all comes together into a dance, I love that! I am an active person by nature and this is just one more way for me to move my body and learn something new. The classes are warm and welcoming and so much fun!

As a full-time working mom, I never seemed to have the time for self-care which ended up being practically non-existent. I knew I needed a change, so I went for it and signed up for classes. I felt right at home with the welcoming community of women and had a great time. My body was thanking me for actually moving, and I was having too much fun to care if it was (yes!) exercise. My middle-aged body appreciates Julie's care and attention to form and ensuring we engage the correct muscles to avoid injury. I look forward to class every week and love how I feel and am now more comfortable in my body.
